In this procedure affected portions of joint i.e. Femoral head and acetabulum are replaced with artificial components to form new joint.

Average age at which THR is done in India is 52 yrs (ranging from 17 – 83 yrs).  Though more common at older age, this procedure may be needed in younger age patient.

Avascular necrosis of femoral head is commonest indication (49%) for which total hip replacements are done in India. Other indications are osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis etc

There are various types of implants available. Doctors usually decide implant which is most suitable for you depending on

  4. Condition of your bones of hip joint

Hip joint is ball and socket joint.  Implants comprises of Stem on thigh bone (femur) side, cup on Pelvic bone (Acetabulum) side and bearing surface. Bearing surface are made up of ceramic, metal or highly cross linked polyethylene.

Pre operative preparation and precautions

As hip replacement is a planned surgery we usually get blood investigations, ECG, Physician fitness done before surgery. We also evaluate to minimize sources of infection in the body.

If you are on any blood thinners like Aspirin, Warfarin or Clopidogrel , these medicines needs to be stopped atleast 5 days before surgery as per physician advise.
